On the strength of a new city sports complex and renovations to three elementary schools, construction in Joplin is pushing into record territory. Building permits for planned construction hit $128.1 million for the city's 2007 fiscal year, which ended Oct. 31, according to city records. That beats the old record, set two years ago of $124.5 million. In the 2006 fiscal year, construction permits in Joplin hit $97.8 million.
The permits reflect construction taking place within the city limits.
The largest permit filed in October was $5.1 million for a new sports complex. Construction crews have been doing dirt work since early September for the game fields, parking lots and tennis courts at the Joplin Sports Center, also called the sports complex.
Dennis Burns, director of business development for Crossland Construction, said, "Our company's work has been consistent, and I don't see anything on the horizon that would change that anytime soon". He said the company's steel erection, dirt and concrete divisions all "are growing and setting records for us internally." He said the company this year set another record: It topped 1,000 employees for the first time since it was founded in 1977. Mr Burns also indicated that we sees $15 million to $30 million in private projects in the next 3 to 5 months. These projects include restaurants, furniture stores and motel chains.
According to city building permits, 137 homes were built during the most recent fiscal year, compared with 150 for the same period one year earlier.
